Chapter Twenty-Five

After the foolishness of the previous evening, things were going better than Jaxson could have hoped. So far today, they had scored five high stakes wins on five different accounts totaling twenty thousand dollars. Not as much as he needed to start working the stock market, but respectable for one day’s work.

Keane and Elekron were on their best behavior. In the five times they’d gone back to make bets, they hadn’t been out of his sight more than half an hour total. He suspected Keane might leave Elekron behind out of spite. Far enough back that she couldn’t reach him with her own ability. But that hadn’t happened, probably because she was afraid of the consequences when she popped back into the here and now alone. And she was right to be afraid. He’d watched some scene on TV once that involved garden snips and fingers. It only took a mention of it to get his point across. Keane was more than a little attached to her fingers.

Coverage ended at eight when the last race was run on the west coast. Betting wouldn’t start again until the following morning. That gave them about fourteen hours to rest and recoup. His back ached from hunching over the online racing form. His eyes burned from staring at screens all day. This was harder work than he’d imagined, but the rewards were stacking up nicely.

“Are you going to feed us sometime soon?” Keane said.

“After last night’s stunt I had considered putting you both on bread and water for a while. But I need you strong enough to go back as often as necessary. Lusc, find some cans of something and heat them up.”

“Stew good?”

“Yummy. Canned stew,” Keane grumbled. “Can we have some burnt white toast too?”

“Yes,” Lusc replied, getting up and heading to the kitchen.

“I was kidding,” Keane called after him with a grimace, but he didn’t acknowledge her. “Where did you find him?”

“In a Polish prison. He broke a woman’s neck, her husband’s too,” Jaxon said. This sharing might curb her smart mouth. “Arrested and thrown in jail, he was awaiting trial when all the inmates in his cellblock ended up dead. No one could explain it. I’d had a little run in with a politician during a friendly poker game. He lost more money than he thought he should, so he had me arrested. When he found out about all those deaths, he put me in that cellblock. Prison officers housed me in the same cell as Lusc, the last survivor. Didn’t work out like old Petrovski expected.”

Jaxson leaned back on the couch, enjoying the trip down memory lane. “Seems Lusc just needed someone to help him understand his power and learn to control it. I needed someone with a reach farther than my own. It wasn’t long until Lusc was an expert in breaking locks and I got pretty good at making people forget what they were hired to do. Namely, keep us in prison. We walked out the front door with our pockets full of the guards’ money.
